Summer Interns (Paid – Annually)
Summary: The Wild & Scenic Westfield River Committee seeks summer interns with an interest in river conservation work. Interns will gain on-the-ground survey and research skills, opportunities to learn in the field, target trainings, and access to a host of professionals working within the Westfield River watershed.
The Interns will be expected to conduct fieldwork- often in challenging conditions; undertake GIS mapping and data collection; and assist with outreach and education. The interns will coordinate and participate in several outreach events, many on weekends, including:
• Wild & Scenic Weekends, May – August, annually
• Cummington Fair, August 27, annually
• Watershed Blitz, Saturday, September 19th, 2020
Qualifications & Responsibilities:
• Experience in leadership and organizational skills, public outreach, interest in conservation, environmental science and/or regional planning;
• Prepare outreach materials, mailings, and online and website updates;
• Attend outreach events, trainings and workdays;
• Knowledge of Invasive plants or a keen interest learning;
• GIS mapping and analysis;
• Provide field and office organization support;
• Assist in organizing a “Watershed Blitz” event, including field reconnaissance, producing maps and materials, publicity and data organizing tasks;
• Additional tasks as needed.
Seeking Interns with Special Skills and Interests in:
• Conducting invasive plant surveys along Savory Brook in Washington and Becket Assist with Conservation commission approval, landowner outreach, data collection, photo monitoring and GIS
• A TV and ORV activity: Identifying Locations where activity is negatively impacting the river corridor.
Coursework should include intro to GIS (more advanced preferred), environmental science and biology.
Majors Desired: Environmental Science, Biology, Geography & Regional Planning
Stipend: An internship stipend of approximately $3,600 plus travel reimbursement is available.
Interns will need to commit to 20-24 hours/week through the summer. Start and end date are somewhat flexible but anticipated to be late May or early June through August.
