Responsibilities
The Legal Specialist holds a key role in initiating and producing complex work with a high level of competence in one or more areas of law, offering crucial support to attorneys and clients. The nature of the work is self-directed and requires significant independent judgmentand discretion. Advanced knowledge and understanding of practice areas, processes, procedures, rules and regulations is required. The Legal Specialist provides leadership and serves as an expert in one or more areas of law, performs legal research, educates, and updates clients/departments on specific legal topics, and takes the lead on significant cases, matters and projects. Specific duties of the Legal Specialist may vary based on department needs, covering subject matter areas such as health law, management of adverse patient event investigations, litigation and data privacy and information security matters.

This position is a combination of remote and onsite supportwork. Individual must live within driving distance to one of the Mayo Clinic sites.

Minimum requirements (one of the following):
- four-year degree and a paralegal certificate from an American Bar Association (ABA) certified program and five years of relevant legal experience required
- bachelor’s degree from an ABA-approved paralegal educational program and five years of relevant legal experience required
- J.D. degree
- bachelor’s degree (not ABA approved) and 5 years of relevant legal experience, including at least 3 years of senior-level paralegal experience.
